Chenab River

 This river is formed by two streams namely Chandra and Bhaga which meet at Tandi in Lahaul and Spiti to form the river Chenab at an elevation of 2286 m. The Vedic name of Chenab river is Askiniand its Sanskrit name is Chandrabhaga The total length of this river is 960 km.Out of which it covers a length of 122 km in Himachal Pradesh. It flows in the Northern part of the state. In terms of volume, Chenab is the largest river of the Himachal Pradesh. The path of Chenab river covers many regions. For example, it covers Pangi valley of Chamba district near Bhujind and after leaving the district at Sansari Nala, it enters Podar valley of Kashmir. The Great Himalayan and Pir Panjal ranges form the Chenab valley.

  • Bhaga River
 It originates from Lahaul valley and flows in South-Westerly direction. It is joined by many snow fed rivers and finally it meets Chandra river at Tandi (Lahaul and Spiti). The upper catchment of this river is characterised by U- shaped valleys, waterfalls and glaciers. Its entire area is deprived of vegetation cover. 
  • Chandra River 
It is a snow fed river and originates from the base of the Himalayan range lying in Lahaul and Spiti district. At first it flows in South-East direction, then it takes a 180 turn and flows in South-West direction. It flows through the vast cold desert that receives little or no rain because it lies in the rain shadow zone of the Pir Panjal range. Koksar village and Lahaul and Spiti lies along this river.
